Andre Derain

This month we are going to be studying the work of Andre Derain (1880-1954), a French Fauvist. Known for his unnatural colors, Derain was once a controversial artist.  So controversial, in fact, that he was kicked out of the Louvre for practice-copying other artists’ work in his own style.  I wonder what young Derain would think while walking out of the museum if he could know that he now has paintings hanging on their wall.

Last month we learned to create animals.  This month we will be learning how to create LIKE animals.

To complete this month’s project you will need the following:

* paint palette / paper plate
* several size synthetic paint brushes (usually labeled “for acrylic”)
* pencil
* eraser
* cardboard or newspaper to protect work surface
* acrylic paint (can substitute tempera)
* 10”x10” canvas, canvas-board, or extra-thick card-stock paper
* optional: felt tip pens in multiple colors (Papermate Flare are good “smash resistant” liners)

I look forward to seeing you on Friday, March 19th at 6:30!
