Adelaide Labille-Guiard

This month we will be studying the work of distinguished portraitist, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard.  From her busy portrait studio on the rue Richelieu, Labille-Guiard excelled in realistic renderings of her subjects in both pastels and oils.  In addition to offering classes to girls, Labille-Guiard was also a vocal proponent of women in the arts.  This unusual political stance during a particularly volatile time in France’s history sets her apart as an independent thinker.
