Rubens

This month we are studying the work of Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. Though we think of the Baroque period mostly for its music (Bach, Vivaldi, Handel), the elaborate use of detail spread into the visual arts of the time too. In addition to his creative mastery, this “gentleman” artist worked as a diplomat (aka. spy), making his life-story one of intrigue and mystery.

Advance Warning! This project is fiddly for our youngest members.  If your child is not yet ready for complex sewing, please encourage them to opt into the glued binding track and focus more on decorating their cover rather than getting frustrated with the sewn bookbinding.

There are a lot of items that are very specific this month.  Feel free to substitute any or all items for their more common counterparts. While the “correct” items work better, you will be able to complete the project regardless of whether you have the fancier version or the more common.

  • bone folder (any solid item with a slightly round edge – a ruler is too sharp, but a comb works great)
  • black mixed media paper 9”x12” (any dark thick paper that is equal to or slightly larger than your insert pages)
  • cardboard (to protect table when using awl)
  • scissors
  • binder clips, 2 (paper clips or a friend with a solid grip will work)
  • mod podge, any finish (white glue can also work)
  • large needle with wide eye
  • waxed thread (waxed dental floss)
  • awl (or an extra-large needle – a cork works well as a handle)
  • everyday paper, 6-12 sheets
  • oil pastels (crayons)

I look forward to seeing you on Zoom Friday, January 15th at 6:30!
